Lighting your object
Use of daylight

Natural daylight is the best source of light for product photography. It gives images a natural colour balance. However, direct, bright sunlight causes harsh shadows and will overexpose parts of the object.

The Light Tent is the perfect solution to overcome these problems. It softens the harsh shadows and ensures that object receives an evenly, dispersed light. A Light Tent used on an overcast day will generate the best results.

A big disadvantage of using the Light Tent outdoors is that your photo shoot is dependant on the weather conditions. Wind and rain can turn your photo shoot into a drama. Photographing indoors with daylight balanced lamps gives you the freedom of taking great pictures anytime.

Using daylight balanced lamps

Normal incandescent lamps or halogen lamps emit light with a colour temperature, which is not suitable for product photography. It will lead to images with an unnatural colour balance (e.g. red and yellow colours dominate the image). Natural daylight has a colour temperature of 5,000-6,000 Kelvin. This colour temperature generates vivid and natural looking colours with white tones, which are truly white.
Our daylight balanced light bulbs emit 5,000-6,000 Kelvin

Our fluorescent daylight bulbs produce 3 to 4 times as much light compared to incandescent light bulbs. These lamps are much cheaper than the costly studio flash light sets. Our daylight bulbs produce, unlike flash, a continuous light which makes it easy to work with. We also offer special flood light stands to support these (sometimes large) bulbs.

When using daylight lamps, we advise to use minimal 2 lamps to prevent shadows on one side of the object. We recommend the following lighting:

• For small Light Tents (40 - 60cm): two small (28W or 36W) day light bulbs. One lamp is often sufficient for the small black tent.
• Mid sized tents (80cm): two 36W or 85W lamps.
• For a large Light Tent (120cm), two to three large lamps (85W) are needed
• When lighting from below (see glass photography) one small lamp (28W) is sufficient.
